BIOMILK interviews Life Coach Andrea Burke, welcoming her to our Health & Wellness Panel
Q. How would you describe yourself (your business, but personally is good too!)?
A. Recently I have been describing myself as a mirror, providing my clients with a view of themselves they have never been able to see before. I help people see themselves differently so that they can create the life they want to life. Overcoming obstacles and challenges are my thing. I’ve been told that I am really good at taking something complex/overwhelming and making it simple, and it turns out I really enjoy it. Also, I would describe myself as honest, compassionate, ambitious, animated, efficient and empathetic. Since I am my business, they are one in the same ????
Q. How did you get into life coaching?
A. After nearly losing someone very close to me to an overdose, I feel like I woke up from sleepwalking through life. It was then that I realized that I wasn’t really fulfilled even though on the outside it looked like I should be. I had “checked off all the boxes” in life yet there was still something missing. I went to therapy and my therapist told me I didn’t need to be there- ha! So, I kept looking for someone to help guide me. The books I enjoyed most were written by life coaches- so I hired one. My life transformed and I decided to enroll to become a Certified Professional Coach. I never realized how impactful that first conversation would be for me. When I understood the power of coaching fully, there was no question in my mind that this was my purpose in life.
Q. What type of clients do you serve and how do you typically get connected with them?
A. My clients are not all that different from me. They are driven, successful career women, who have accomplished a lot in life, but are feeling overwhelmed and unfulfilled. Their lives are missing balance. It is in their DNA to be successful and strive for more, but they are realizing that their personal happiness has been sacrificed and they want to fix it. They are high functioning, multi-tasking, amazing, strong women. Often times they do not even realize that help is an option for them because nothing is “wrong” but it is not “right” either. As a result, most of my clients come from word of mouth, referrals, and seeing their friends evolve through working with a coach.
Q. What are some of the most common work and life misconceptions you hear from clients (or anyone, really) and what is your advice to debunk them?
A. Great question! I often hear from people in general that “no one loves their job” or “no one is always happy” or “the struggle is real.” Rewind two years and I was saying the same things. Now I want to share that life does not need to be hard, anything is possible, you can be happy, and if “she” can do it, so can you! What I love about coaching is that I do not give advice. You are the expert in your life, I just help you look at it differently than you ever have before. Like I said earlier, I am a mirror reflecting a different view back to you. When someone comes to me with a struggle, I just help them look at that struggle from multiple angles and they choose which way to address it so that they can reach their goals. My job is to help you see the possibilities.
Q. Family, kids, work, friends, activities left and right… We all know what busy looks like. How do you find the right balance?
A. Balance looks and feels different to everyone. It can be so overwhelming to juggle all the different things that are demanding of our time. The biggest shift for me was releasing a lot of the negative energy I was carrying around. Stress, pressure to do it all, frustration, guilt, the need for perfection. I found balance when I was able to release the expectations and come up with my own guardrails to life. By uncovering what was really important to me, helping people, being an entrepreneur, being authentic and deep, I was able to re-balance my life and make those more of a priority. I make a very conscious effort to check in with myself, say no to what does not serve me, and yes to the things that do.
Q. What is/are your favorite stress reduction hacks? Promise, we won’t tell 🙂
A. This is going to sound so obvious, but it works and not enough people do it! When you catch yourself winding up just notice it, pause, and breathe. Everyone knows that feeling you get inside when you begin to get overwhelmed- right? You can feel it building up inside of you. Notice it. Pause your reaction. Breathe. With a clear head you can ask yourself how you want to show up in this moment. By slowing down you give yourself the opportunity to choose differently.
Q. Healthy mind, healthy body! We say healthy comfort food, you say …
A. Healthy self-talk!!! How we talk to OURSELVES is so important! The conversations you have with yourself should be treated the same way you would talk to you mom, sister, friend or spouse. Be kind to yourself.
